The main goal of the course is to give students who already have basic knowledge of microbiology an insight into the following:
a) Microbiological protocols for diagnosis and monitoring of infections in different organ systems.
b) The problem of intrahospital infections, the primary routes of their transmission and the role of the microbiology laboratory in the prevention and control of these infections.
c) Microbiological protocols for diagnosis and monitoring of infections in immunocompromised patients.
d) Microbiological diagnosis of emerging and re-emerging diseases.
e) Practical recommendations for interpretation of results of microbiological diagnosis.

According to the syllabus, the seminar lessons and practical assignments (clinical vignettes) will be open weekly according to schedule starting on Monday, March 23rd, 2026. Students must go through all seminar lessons and practical assignments (clinical vignettes) in the given weeks. Students go through the seminar lessons by themselves online on the Moodle platform. Then, at a pre-defined time (every other Wednesday, 16:00-18:15), the students will have online LIVE interactive classes on the Moodle study platform (location is: General- Group A -Amphitheatre-Clinical cases 2025-2026 for group A and General- Group B - Amphitheatre -Clinical cases 2025-2026 for students from group B) with the teacher to go through and discuss the practical assignments together.
The professors will follow students’ progress weekly.
The lessons will be open successively and remain open until the end of the course and during exam periods, so students can adequately prepare for the exam.
The seminar lessons give insight into causative agents of infections in different organ systems and microbiology protocols for their laboratory diagnosis, prevention and treatment. Within lessons, some questions must be answered correctly to pass to the next page of the lesson. The seminar lessons should be finished in full, but are not graded.
The practical assignments (clinical vignettes) will be open the week after the seminar lessons. So, the student first goes through the seminar lessons, followed by the practical. Each set of practical assignments is composed of 2-4 clinical cases with different numbers of questions. To pass through queries and all cases within a given set, all the questions must be answered correctly, which is checked by clicking “Check” at the end of the question. With the most correct or incorrect answers, the student will be explained why the answer is correct or incorrect. Multiple tries are allowed for answering questions. Every question brings a score of 1, but if the answer is incorrect, this score will be lower than 1. The maximum number of scored points for each practical assignment set is 10. To successfully finish the practical assignment set, the student must score at least 51% or 5.1 or more. If the score is lower than 5.1, the system automatically returns the student to the beginning of the practical assignment set to start again. The given score is only essential for finishing the assignments and is not part of the final exam.
To complete the course and receive a signature on the class attended, the student must complete all seminar lessons and practical assignments online. The student can have one absence from five LIVE online interactive classes. If there is more than one absence, the student must make up for it within the period provided at the semester's end.
Grading Policy of Clinical Microbiology course
A test of 30 multiple-choice questions (MCQ) performs the final assessment of student learning outcomes.
The exam result is expressed as "passed" or "not passed" (there are no grades).
The test is passed when the score is 16/30 (50% plus 1) or higher.
