University of Belgrade is one of the oldest universities in the region. The origin of the University of Belgrade can be tracked down to the beginning of the 19th century, when Dositej Obradović founded the College in 1808. Today, University of Belgrade is amongst the top 400 universities in the world, according to the most recent ranking carried out by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, better known as the Shanghai List. Today University of Belgrade is the leading institution of higher education in the region by adapting to the challenges of modern times on one hand, and preserving what's worth in its tradition on the other. This is precisely what makes it recognized as a true national brand.
Faculty of Medicine is one of the oldest faculties of the University of Belgrade. It was founded on December 9, 1920. Nine decades later, with 37.225 MD, 3.529 magister and 2.626 PhD obtained degree, the Faculty of Medicine is the leading institution for medical educational in Serbia and a significant player in regional terms. Numerical data show that about 40% of Serbian medical students are taught at the Faculty, that two-thirds of clinical specialists and subspecialists diplomas are from the Faculty, and that over 60% of biomedical research projects funded by Ministry of Science are carried out at the Faculty.
The Law, introduced in 2005, significantly changed the character of postgraduate studies at Serbian universities. In particular, the traditional modality of obtaining a Doctor of Sciences degree by writing thesis based on mentor-guided research that lasted 3-5 years was phased out by formal/structured doctoral studies of PhD type in 2006. Latest PhD program in medical sciences was accredited in 2011 and covers a broad range of basic, preventive and clinical thematic fields. 121 PhD student was enrolled in one of 15 modules in 2013. As being member of ORPHEUS (Organization of PhD Education in Biomedicine and Health Sciences in the European System) Faculty of Medicine Belgrade is making efforts to harmonize its PhD programme according to the standards of this organization. It should be stressed that more than 60 thesis per year are defended, which represent a good indicator of the level of research at given academic institution and the Faculty of Medicine Belgrade is proud of its record.
The importance of research at the Faculty of Medicine University of Belgrade can hardly be overemphasized. Numerous investigations in the fields of basic, clinical, applied and epidemiological medicine are constantly carried out. The emphasis is on collaboration between basic and clinical researchers, especially regarding multidisciplinary approach to the investigations of various diseases. This integrative approach is a leading principle in the development of both molecular and translational medicine which should enable transfer of knowledge obtained in basic disciplines to clinical practice, including new diagnostics and therapeutic procedures. Many laboratories at the Faculty of Medicine are specialized in experimental research in various scientific disciplines. It is important to note that in the last decade Faculty provided funds, with the essential support of the Ministry of education, science and technological development of the Republic of Serbia, for purchasing new equipment and adapting the existing labs that significantly improved the research infrastructure. The majority of research projects at the Faculty of Medicine are funded by the Ministry of education, science and technological development of the Republic of Serbia. Fifty five professors of our Faculty coordinate national projects that represent more than 50% of all projects in the field of medical sciences. Besides national, Faculty of Medicine participates in many international research and educational projects (EU Framework programs, Tempus, Erasmus, NIH etc). The basic requirement for academic career development is a sound publication record, as well as teaching excellence which stems from the translation of scientific knowledge into lecturing. Indeed, a survey of the Web of Science indicates over 675 papers published by researchers from the Faculty in the academic 2012/2013, with cumulative impact factor more than 1600.
It is the policy of the Faculty of Medicine University of Belgrade to support its staff in establishing collaboration with colleagues abroad. Participation at the professional and scientific meetings is of great importance in order to keep in track with the latest achievements in biomedicine. Center for international collaboration of the Faculty of Medicine, founded in 2003, developed strong international network in the fields of education and research, especially regarding project implementation (EU Framework programs, Tempus, Erasmus Mundus, NIH etc.). Center for international collaboration promotes academic networking, enabling students and academics exchange visits to academic institutions abroad. The Faculty and its Center for Int. collaboration successfully organized numerous international educational and scientific meetings and hosted distinguished researchers from abroad.
