Theoretical part of the course

Basics of physical medicine and rehabilitation. The main features of the rehabilitation process. The main components of rehabilitation. The importance and methods of functional assessment. Functional assessment of general and local mobility. The importance of electro-diagnostical methods in rehabilitation.

Methods of physical medicine and rehabilitation. Basics of clinical application of thermotherapy, hydrotherapy, kinesiotherapy, mechanotherapy, electrotherapy, phototherapy, sonotherapy, magnetic therapy, balneoclimatology factors and orthotic-prosthetic aids.

Early rehabilitation, the importance of early rehabilitation to prevent multisystem effects of inactivity.

Principles of clinical assessment and basis of rehabilitation of the early and late stages of diseases and injuries in cardiology and cardiac surgery, pulmonology and thoracic surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, rheumatology, pediatrics, and gerontology.

 

Practical part of the course: practicals, other forms of instruction. Research work.

Clinical assessment of patients with various diseases and disabilities, interpretation of findings with understanding of rehabilitation goals and basics of applying the methods of physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Review of therapeutic methods of physical medicine and rehabilitation in selected diseases and injuries in clinical work.

1. Basics of Physical medicine and rehabilitation, definitions, physical agents, functional assessment, objectives and methods

Aim: Introduction to methods of Physical medicine and rehabilitation in certain conditions and diseases, the possibilities of application of physical procedures and basis of physiological functioning of agents and application in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases and sequeles.

Assessment of functional status: history, clinical examination, examination of physiotherapist, consultation examinations. Diagnostic procedures.

Agents: Classification of agents. Physiological mechanisms of action of agents. Indications and contraindications. The mode of administration of the agent. Duration of therapy procedures.

Kinesiotherapy: Biological and physiological functioning of kinesiotherapy, principles of administration, indications and contraindications to kinesiotherapy.

Functional tests: Application of appropriate functional tests in the assessment of the functional capacity of people (estimated range of motion in the joints, manual muscle test, measuring of the length and scope of the extremities, dynamometry, and other tests of general functional ability). 1 class

 

2. Rehabilitation of specific population groups

Aim: Getting to know the specifics of geriatric population, patients with diabetes and patients with malignant diseases.

Getting to know the specifics of geriatric rehabilitation population of patients with diabetes and patients with malignant diseases. Getting to know the specific application of therapeutic interventions in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation. Getting to know the importance of physical activity and the prevention of decondition in patients with diabetes mellitus.

Learning about the importance and measures of palliative rehabilitation. 1 class

 

3. Rehabilitation in Cardiology

Aim: Getting to know the specifics of cardiac patients and methods of physical therapy and rehabilitation.

Clinical evaluation and rehabilitation of patients with previous myocardial infarction, patients with aortal-coronary bypass, conditions following operations on valvular apparatus and stable angina pectoris. Chronic venous insufficiency and lymphedema. Getting acquainted with the general and specific parameters (monitoring fatigue, heart rate, arterial tension, monitoring) for inclusion and interruption of physical therapy. Introduction to the methods of physical training and kinesiotherapeutic procedures (breathing exercises for upper and lower extremities, controlled walk on the flat surface, walk on Nyllin's step, the load on cycloergometer). Assessment of treatment outcomes through the stress test.

Getting to know the basics and specifics of rehabilitation in patients with peripheral vascular disease as well as the main clinical manifestations (claudication, pain, swelling, redness, etc.). Differential diagnosis and diagnostic methods. 1 class

 

4. Rehabilitation in Pulmonology

Aim: Familiarization with pathological conditions in pulmonology and respiratory rehabilitation specifics.

Clinical evaluation and rehabilitation of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, cystic fibrosis, and after thoracotomy.

Getting to know the specifics of pulmonary rehabilitation in neuromuscular diseases with fibrosis.

Indications and contraindications for respiratory rehabilitation, postiral drainage, percussion and vibro-massage, and aerosol therapy. Introduction to the practical importance of application of the specific apparatus, expectorant. Learning about the weather tests and importance of general condition exercises in these patients.

Pathological conditions that are contraindication in pulmonary rehabilitation. 1 class

 

5. Rehabilitation in Rheumatology

Aim: Introduction to the most common rheumatic diseases. The division, pathophysiology and treatment. Physical therapy procedures in various pathological conditions of rheumatic patients.

The principles of clinical evaluation of rheumatic diseases, diagnosis and differential diagnosis.

Indications and contraindications for physical therapy, as well as the creation of a rehabilitation program. Introduction to degenerative diseases of the locomotor system, extra- joint rheumatism, inflammatory rheumatism. Basic principles in the treatment of osteoporosis and risk factors with special emphasis on prevention. Education of patients and improvement of the quality of living. 1 class

 

6. Rehabilitation of patients with peripheral motor neuron damage

Aim: Introduction to the diseases and injuries of peripheral nerves and clinical conditions as a consequence of the reduction or loss of motor, sensory and autonomic functions.

Creating a plan for the rehabilitation and treatment programs, indications and contraindications for the use of physical procedures.

The division of nerve damage and application of physical therapy and orthotics according to the stages of recovery of nerve. Introduction to functional testing and application of tests in order to diagnose and evaluate the damage.

Compensatory skills and use of aids in the stage of sequele. 1 class

 

7. Rehabilitation of patients with central motor neuron damage

Aim: Introduction to impairments and motor neuron diseases (cerebrovascular diseases, expansive processes, ischemia, hemorrhage, demyelinating disease, trauma, disease of the spinal cord). Creating a rehabilitation treatment plan by stages and treatment of disease sequele.

Rehabilitation procedures in the acute phase of the disease, the use of specific and nonspecific measures and the importance of motor control. The program of rehabilitation in chronic phase, training for daily activities, re-education of motor activities. Training in the use of aids. Introduction to the principles of social and psychological rehabilitation.

Clinical evaluation of CNS damage. Spinal cord injury (compression, trauma, infections, vascular). Creating an individual plan of treatment and rehabilitation, with special attention to patients with sequele and comorbidity. 1 class

 

8. Specifics of rehabilitation of children: definitions, methods and objectives

Aim: Introduction to the functional status of newborn, infant, child.

Newborn: Assessment of neuromuscular status, examination of locomotive system, diagnosis and differential diagnosis. Physical procedures in various states and diseases. Making plan and treatment programs (consultative examinations, teamwork).

Infant: Assessment of neuromuscular status, examination of the locomotive system, deviations from the expected motor development at the age. Diagnostic methods and differential diagnosis. Creating a plan for physical therapy. The importance and role of the orthotics in the treatment.

Child: History by systems, introduction to the specifics of the pathology of the age. Pain growth. Trauma. Introduction to clinical signs of disease and deformities of the locomotor system. Timely identification of deformities of the locomotor system and the appropriate application of therapeutic procedures.

Introduction to various pathological conditions by systems and application of agents. 1 class

 

9. Early rehabilitation in children

Aim: Introduction to the measures and procedures for early rehabilitation in the intensive care in acute pediatric and postoperative states in children.

Getting to know the possible complications and the importance of early rehabilitation measures in the outcome of treatment and functional recovery.

Application of physical therapy and rehabilitation in preventing complications. Early mobilization and creation of rehabilitation plan in phases. 1 class

 

10. Clinical and neurophysiological diagnostics in pediatric rehabilitation

Aim: Becoming familiar with the neurophysiological tests used in the diagnosis of neuromuscular diseases and injuries in order to obtain accurate diagnosis and prognosis and monitoring of therapeutic recovery.

Introduction to the detection electromyography, electroneurography and evoked potentials (somatosensory, visual and auditory) and classical electro diagnostics. 1 class

 

11. Principles of orthopedic trauma rehabilitation

Aim: Introduction to the most common injuries of the locomotor system and methods of treatment in orthopedics and traumatology.

Diagnostics and differential diagnosis. Principles of rehabilitation treatment in the preoperative and postoperative period, during and after the necessary immobilization. Setting the primary objective of rehabilitation (indications for orthotics, functional recovery, and psychosocial rehabilitation). The training of walk, occupational therapy. Clinical evaluation and complications after traumatic states. Application of procedures for the treatment of physical complications.

12. Specifics of physical medicine and early rehabilitation in the field of surgery

Objective: Understanding the importance of implementing measures and procedures for early rehabilitation of the operated patients in different areas of surgery.

Specifics of physiotherapy and rehabilitation in various fields of surgery.

Creating individual programs and time to start treatment in different postoperative conditions.

Indications and contraindications to therapy application. 1 class

 

13. Rehabilitation after cardiac interventions

Aim: Creation of individual program in the early postoperative phase with the introduction to the methods of early rehabilitation.

Implementation of physical therapy and rehabilitation at a late stage. Therapy in chronic conditions. Getting to know the indications and contraindications for physical therapy application, as well as tracking parameters (monitoring) during rehabilitation. 1 class

 

14. Rehabilitation after neurosurgical interventions

Aim: Application of physical therapy in the early and late stages of treatment of various conditions of the patients operated on after tumors, cerebrovascular diseases, infections and trauma. Diagnostics and differential diagnosis.

Principles of physical therapy in the early postoperative period, programming methods of treatment and methods of prevention of complications.

Application of physical therapy at a late stage in a variety of conditions and diseases of CNS and spinal cord, treatment of sequels of the locomotor system, soft tissues, and genitourinary system. The measures and procedures in psychosocial rehabilitation. 1 class

 

15. Fundamentals of balneoclimatology

Aim: Definition and classification. Classification and effect of mineral waters. Peloids and medicinal gases. Balneorehabilitation in neurological, rheumatologic, cardiologic and orthopedic-trauma diseases. Indications and contraindications. Basics of climatology. 4 classes

1. Introduction to the clinical application of physical agents

Getting to know the mode of application of physical agents, making the treatment plan (combining of different agents). 1 class

2. Introduction to therapeutic methods for cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. Application method of aerosol therapy, drain positions and auxiliary techniques. Aerobic training. Vibro- massage and percussion. Kinesiotherapy in cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. 1 class

3. Introduction to the functional assessment of the locomotor system

History taking, clinical examination, functional assessment (application of functional tests). Placing of orthotics. 1 class

4. Introduction to methods of therapy of musculoskeletal rehabilitation

History taking, physical examination, measurement of range of motion, limb length, manual muscle test. Application of agents. 1 class

5. Introduction to methods of therapy in neurological rehabilitation

History taking, physical examination, assessment of functional status, making the treatment plan with the use of physical agents. 1 class

6. Introduction to the functional assessment, setting goals and therapeutic methods of rehabilitation in clinical work in the field of pediatric physical therapy. Physical examination, establishing of diagnosis or establishing of diagnosis using basic diagnostic methods. 1 class

7. Introduction to therapeutic methods in the field of early rehabilitation and patients with congenital anomalies

8. Introduction to diagnostic methods in children's rehabilitation

Introduction to examination of the newborn, infant and child and the needs of elementary and specific methods and consultative examinations. 1 class

13. Introduction to the therapeutic methods of balneoclimatology

Getting to know the effects of balneoclimatologic therapy. Indications and contraindications in different states and in different populations. 4 classes
