Medicine and Society

Course Objectives:

Introduction to medicine and society: The aim of this part of the course is to introduce students to social-humanistic theoretical concepts relevant to medical practice, the mutual influence of social and cultural factors on health, illness and healthcare, the importance of communication, attitudes and interaction in medicine and society, and the challenges that arise at the intersection of medicine and society. 

Medical ethics: The aim of this part of the course is to introduce students to the basic concepts of ethics as a philosophical discipline and of medical ethics as a branch of applied ethics, to the main ethical responsibilities of the physician, basic principles of medical ethics, and main ethical issues in medicine.

Social medicine: The aim of this part of the course is to introduce students to the definition of health, the models of health and quality of life; the role of medicine and health services in the process of improving the health of the population; human rights and patients’ rights, especially concerning the access to health care; public health ethics and ethical theories in the development of health care; the community and the influence of social and cultural phenomena on the development of community for health.

Course Outcomes:

The knowledge acquired in the part of the course Introduction to medicine and society enables students to to see the interconnectedness of the world, society and medicine through an interdisciplinary approach, understand basic patterns of behavior associated with maintaining health, the onset of disease and the treatment process, recognize the importance of social interaction in medicine, distinguish mechanisms for forming and changing attitudes and assess their impact on health decisions and patient behavior, and assess the basic principles of a professional and culturally sensitive approach to different groups of patients.

The knowledge acquired in the part of the course Medical ethics enables students to comprehend the basic concepts of medical ethics, to understand and explain the main basic ethical principles, to understand how these principles apply to clinical practice, and to analytically approach ethical issues in clinical practice.

The knowledge acquired in the part of the course Social medicine enables students to get to know the holistic approach; be able to identify the action of social and cultural phenomena in the development of the community; get to know, respect and protect human and patient rights; and get to know the ethics of public health and ethical issues related to the development of the health care system.

Grading Policy

The exam for the module Medicine and society is in the form of the test, covering the entire course content. The test includes 50 multiple choice questions, with one correct answer out of four (2 points for each correct answer, max. 100 points). Test consists of three parts: the first part (Introduction to medicine and society) contains 13 questions, the second part (Medical ethics) contains 24 questions, and the third part (Social medicine) contains 13 questions. Students are required to pass each part of the test in order to pass the exam. For Introduction to medicine and society the minimum number of correct answers is 7 (14 points), for Medical ethics 13 (26 points) and for Social medicine 7 (14 points). No grade is provided for this module, with the status being either passed (for students who acquired sufficient number of correct answers for each part of the test) or not passed.
